How one high school football game led 62 players and coaches to quarantine

A high school football game on a wet Halloween night is the center of a COVID-19 outbreak in Palm Beach County. To date, 20 players and coaches on one team have tested positive and over 60 people have been quarantined.
The county’s contact tracers put the pieces together days after the Oct. 31 game between Palm Beach Central High School and Glades Central Community High School, according to Alex Shaw, a spokesman for the county department of health.

Governors halt high school sports as COVID-19 surges

Governors in several states are pulling back on high school and other youth sports as coronavirus infections surge, dismissing the argument that sports should continue because few kids and teenagers die of Covid-19.
Utah, Michigan, New Jersey and Illinois are among the states putting the brakes on such activities for now.

Head coach Daryl Hayes' St. John's Catholic Prep football team suffered a 53-0 loss to host Concordia Prep on Saturday.
Normally, it's the kind of game every Vikings coach and player would rather forget. Instead, it may well go down as one of the most inspirational games in St. John's football history.
That's because during the second half, Hayes continued to coach after suffering a heart attack, finishing out what could prove to be his team's last game of a season that started late and might end earlier than expected because of the coronavirus pandemic.

One of Louisville's top high school basketball coaches is still teaching the fundamentals during the COVID-19 pandemic, but he knows it could come back to hurt him down the road.
James Schooler, who coaches at Schooler Prep Academy in the Portland neighborhood, said he likes to build trust in young men and women on and off the basketball court. Schooler works with dozens of players, but most of them are not part of his program at Fern Creek.

A group of more than 100 California high school coaches convened over Zoom this week to draw out their mission: After months of waiting out the coronavirus pandemic, they want student-athletes back playing organized sports again.
Hope that the games will soon return is dwindling fast as scheduled practice dates for early-to-mid-December draw closer without any recommended health and safety guidelines for how to proceed with the football season — or any sport — handed down from state health officials.

Inadequate sleep may significantly affect sports performance of young athletes

Faced with competing demands including school, sports, and social life, young athletes tend to put off sleep in favor of other activities. Generally, the evidence suggests that they don't meet recommended guidelines for sleep duration: 9 to 12 hours for children aged 6 to 12 years and 8 to 10 hours for adolescents aged 13 to 18 years.
