Sports psychologist gives athletes, coaches advice on dealing with COVID-19 shutdown
Los Angeles Times
At a time when Southern California has returned to a stay-at-home environment because of a surge in COVID-19 cases, Westlake Village-based sports psychologist Andrew Yellen said athletes and coaches need to “stop looking at what you can’t do” and “start looking at what you can do.”
“Somebody gets a torn up right knee,” he said. “What can he do? Well, you can’t work out your right knee. You can do upper body.”
Yellen has been seeing teenage patients during this time of no high school sports, and said it’s their parents who seem more upset than the kids.

Flourishing amidst COVID: If Camus (and Aristotle) were your coach
Positive Coaching Alliance
Youth athletes are in the midst of a legitimately challenging time, on so many levels. Most can’t play the sport they love, the activity couched most deeply in their identity. This is all exacerbated by recent cancelations of anticipated seasons and the uncertainty of when competitions will even resume.
As with many things in life, perspective matters.

Want to win someone over? Talk like they do.
Harvard Business Review
Whether you’re pitching a big client, presenting to an executive, or attempting to win over a judge, a strong preexisting relationship with the person who’s evaluating you is likely to make you much more effective. Why is that? In our recent research, forthcoming in Administrative Science Quarterly, we found that preexisting relationships give people greater insight into how their evaluators think, reason, interpret, and process evidence, helping them tailor their messages with a process we call linguistic mirroring.

How educators can best focus on the social-emotional needs of boys
By Sheilamary Koch
Creating safe spaces for youth, in particular boys and young men, to express what they’re going through and heal from trauma is one of Chad Reed’s overriding objectives. His personal history and work with nonprofits serving youth of color in the San Francisco Bay Area has made him a strong advocate for social-emotional learning (SEL), which he believes is a must before academic subject matter. While developing the soft skills reflected in CASEL’s five competencies can be challenging for all students, one's gender, socio-economic level and cultural background can shape how readily a student can integrate this learning.

New sports guidelines for young athletes after COVID-19
The New York Times
The American Academy of Pediatrics posted updated guidance on young people and sports in the pandemic, making a strong recommendation that participants should wear face masks for all indoor sports. It made exceptions only while swimming and diving, since it’s harder to breathe through wet masks; during gymnastics and cheerleading, where masks could get caught or obstruct vision; and during wrestling contact, where they could be a choking hazard.

The benefits of yoga for bad knees
Verywell Health

Many common exercises like running and aerobics are high-impact exercises, which can put pressure on the knees and worsen knee pain.
