8-man football 'an interesting alternative,' and it's coming to Indiana high schools
Indianapolis Star
From April 14: Waldron and Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian are high schools that appear to have little in common on the surface. Waldron, a rural public high school in Shelby County with 161 students, has been around since the horse and buggy days of more than a century ago. Blackhawk Christian, a private school of 245 students in metropolitan Fort Wayne, opened in the early 1970s. One similarity the schools share: no football. But that is about to change.

As high school football games get testier, refs are harder to find
The Washington Post
From Oct. 20: For many, the pressures of the job have surpassed its appeal, leading to a shortage that has colored this high school football season. Because of that shortage, a number of games, mostly in Prince William County, have been moved to Thursdays, obstructing practice schedules, cutting into ticket revenue and aggravating players’ aches and pains. With fewer eyes on the action, coaches and refs alike say games are officiated worse than they should be. Many referees believe these problems will only get worse.

What does it take to be a good high school coach?
AZPreps365.com
From March 31: The responsibilities and expectations of high school coaches are different from any other coaching level. High school coaches must prepare for their leadership role by finishing courses laid out for them by their state board. The Arizona Interscholastic Association's Article 17 identifies the key elements that every high school coach must obtain. Among other things, they have to abide by the rules set out and exemplify the behavior of teaching professionals. High school coaches are not paid like collegiate and professional coaches, but the reward of their job goes further than what is left on the field or court.

Regarding sportsmanship, it's time for wake-up call in high school sports
NFHS
From Feb. 24: From time to time, everyone needs a wake-up call to get back on course, to regain focus and to “get with the program.” That time is at hand in high school sports as it relates to unsportsmanlike conduct. In the 103-year history of the NFHS and organized sports in the United States, good sportsmanship has been one of the most important outcomes of these programs. When appropriate behavior occurs, competitive play is more enjoyable for everyone. And for some individuals recently, the games have not been enjoyable.

50 years of Title IX: The defining moments of women's sports
Sports Illustrated
From June 9: When Title IX was passed 50 years ago, there wasn’t a single mention of “sports” or “athletics” anywhere in the bill. The focus was on prohibiting sex-based discrimination and leveling the playing field for girls and women in education, but it didn’t take long for those protections to literally be taken to the field. Without Title IX, it’s difficult to imagine that women’s sports would be what they are today. From the youth level to college to professional, the success of girl and women athletes today can all be directly tied to a law passed in 1972.
