NFHS issues guidelines for high school sports to resume this fall

From May 22: The National Federation of State High School Sports Association laid the framework for high school athletics around the nation to return this fall.In a 16-page document, the NFHS released a three-phase plan developed by the NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC). The document explains the three-phase plan and labeled sports as higher risk, moderate risk and lower risk.

From July 17: There’s a new normal for high school student athletes across the state. Before the workout even begins, pre-screening temperature check, a daily questionnaire asking about symptoms, travel history and if they’ve had contact with anyone who may be sick. “We screened 210 student athletes and it worked out very well,” said Sandy Mamary, Westfield Public Schools supervisor of athletics.

From July 10: One of the possible contingency plans being considered by the Michigan High School Athletic Association is to flip-flop the spring and fall sports seasons. The idea behind the plan is to give a high-contact sport like football – and indoor sports like volleyball and girls swimming – a chance to be played after what many hope to be the end of the pandemic in the spring of 2021.

From July 17: Time is the best thing on the side of a new proposal that has been submitted to the WIAA on the topic of getting high school sports going again. The proposal, submitted by a group of school administrators, suggests a plan that keeps winter sports where they are, moves fall sports to the spring and spring sports to next summer.

Helmet safety could delay high school football season

From May 7: The spread of COVID-19 isn’t the only issue that could delay the start of the high school football season. It is mandatory for teams in El Paso and around the country to have their football helmets undergo a safety inspection. The companies that inspect the helmets, Riddell and Schutt, are currently shut down.

From March 19: Even as state high school athletics associations across the country shut down their operations for the rest of the academic year, and despite a U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report indicating that the coronavirus pandemic could span 18 months, some states are holding onto hope that at least part of their spring sports seasons can be salvaged.
