Biden issues roadmap for governors to tap into infrastructure funds

President Joe Biden urged U.S. governors on Monday to ramp up their construction plans as his administration rolled out a guidebook for accessing the nearly $1 trillion made available by the bipartisan infrastructure deal. Biden welcomed governors to the White House as part of the winter meeting of the National Governors Association, and he cajoled them on the importance of infrastructure.

Feds clear the way for Gateway Tunnel project to get billions in funding

The final hurdle needed to qualify for federal funding to start building the $12.3 billion Gateway rail Tunnel was cleared Thursday when the Federal Transit Administration raised its rating of the project. FTA officials announced the tunnel project’s rating had been raised to “medium-high,” meaning that the Hudson River Tunnels are eligible to move forward in the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program process to access federal funding for the project.

Domestic terrorists have developed "credible, specific plans" to attack the U.S. power grid and view it as a "particularly attractive target given its interdependency with other infrastructure sectors," according to a security briefing issued Monday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and first reported by The Daily Beast. The alert warned of "physical damage" to electrical infrastructure, raising the specter of the 2013 sniper attack on Pacific Gas & Electric's Metcalf substation that damaged 17 transformers.

More women in a STEM field leads people to label it as a 'soft science,' according to new research

This effort is sometimes described as a way to reduce the wage gap. Reducing wind turbine wakes could save wind farms millions

In the spring of 2022, researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will launch an international, multi-institutional wind energy field campaign called the American WAKE experimeNt (AWAKEN). Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wind Energy Technologies Office, the study will amass the world's most comprehensive dataset on a wind energy atmospheric phenomenon including wakes that can cost the average wind farm about 10% of its potential energy.

Stakeholders urge action in Congress at $12 billion in infrastructure funding waits on hold

The failure of Congress to approve a year-long transportation appropriations bill is putting funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) in limbo for states. The Continuing Resolution passed in December 2021 to keep the federal government operating does not allow full access to increased transportation funding in the $1.2 trillion BIL signed into law in November 2021.
