Construction Activity Drives Coatings Demand
Construction activity, both public and private, is a prime driver of coatings demand. According to Census Bureau data released on April 1, spending on private construction was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of $698.2 billion, 0.2 percent above the revised January estimate of $696.9 billion. Residential construction was $349.9 billion (SAAR) in February, and was slightly below the revised January estimate of $350.5 billion. Nonresidential construction was $348.4 billion (SAAR) in February, 0.5 percent above the revised January estimate of $346.5 billion.
The Census also provides a detailed breakdown of construction spending, showing spending that takes place in a number of key segments. For example, the Bureau reports on construction spending on manufacturing facilities, along with a number of sub-segments, such as chemical manufacturing. The chemical construction figure not only drives some coatings demand, but is potentially a useful proxy for the industries direction, as rising investment in chemical manufacturing infrastructure would indicate current strength and potentially additional capacity going forward.
The graph below shows that after steep declines during and after the recession, both manufacturing construction and chemical manufacturing rose, although chemical has risen more steeply than manufacturing in general. This is likely reflective of some major investment in the sector since 2011m when the rate of construction activity was roughly 25% of its current level.

The recent boom in shale oil and gas has generated much of this increased construction activity and is likely to continue to have a major impact going forward. The American Chemistry Council has identified 226 U.S. chemical industry projects tied to shale oil and gas, representing cumulative capital investments totaling $138.0 billion, with approximately 61% representing foreign direct investment. These include debottlenecking projects, additions/expansions, and greenfield projects and all are related to the new availability of shale oil and gas.
