| Coatings Compete for Consumer Time and Spending
|
    |
Coatings are marketed to a wide variety of customers, including manufacturers, painting contractors, and consumers, who use them to maintain and improve their properties. In the consumer segment, coatings compete with other goods, not only for scarce customer dollars, but also for a portion of their customers’ scarce time.
Housing takes the largest share of American families’ income, accounting for $2.26 trillion in expenditures, or approximately 30% of family income after taxes (June 2015 Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES); Bureau of Labor Statistics). Of that total, Americans report that they spent approximately $165 billion on maintenance, repairs, and insurance. The DIY paint expenditure of nearly $10 billion (along with the “paint-it-for-me” segment, comprises a significant portion of those expenditures (June 2015 CES; Paint Consumer Research Program).
In this regard, also understanding how consumers allocate their 24-hour daily allotment can provide insight to manufacturers who are competing not only for their financial resources, but time resources, as well. While some consumers deal with time constraints by hiring others to perform painting and other home maintenance activities, the large and enduring DIY segment shows that many consumers resolve the time-cost equation in favor of doing these activities themselves. In fact, as shown in Figure 1, males spend approximately 10 minutes a day on interior and exterior maintenance, repair and decoration (which, on a monthly basis, equates to roughly 5 hours). Paint is obviously a big part of that, and coatings manufacturers compete aggressively with other demands on homeowners’ time and wallets to gain their share of both.
