Vermont Legislature Passes Bill to Regulate Chemicals in Children's Products
After a heated battle in the Statehouse, on May 9, the Vermont State Legislature narrowly passed S. 239, a bill to regulate chemicals found in children's consumer products. The bill was passed with a vote by the Senate of 26–3 and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin.
ACA Urges Senate to Pass EXPIRE Act
The EXPIRE Act will extend the tax provisions that expired at the end of 2013 — provisions that benefit a wide range of taxpayers, including associations, businesses, individuals, community development organizations, and non-profit organizations and that are important to U.S. jobs and the broader economy.
Advance Report on Durable Goods Manufacturers' Shipments, Inventories and Orders
Durable goods manufacturing is the key driver for OEM coatings demand and is a closely watched figure. The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that in April, new orders for manufactured durable goods increased $1.9 billion or 0.8 percent to $239.9 billion. This was the third consecutive month of increase, following a 3.6 percent March increase. Transportation equipment, also up three consecutive months, led the increase, $1.7 billion or 2.3 percent to $76.9 billion. On the other hand, shipments of manufactured durable goods were down $0.6 billion or 0.2 percent to $237.2 billion in April, following two consecutive monthly increases. Transportation equipment, which was down $0.7 billion or 1.0 percent to $69.5 billion following three consecutive monthly increases, drove virtually all of the decrease.

China Developing Varied VOC Regulations
The central government and many local governments in the People's Republic of China are initiating various plans and regulations to control volatile organic compounds (VOC) in China. Regulations have been developing rapidly over the last two to three years due to public pressure against the rapidly deteriorating air quality.
