Greek Debt Crisis Highlights Sovereign Debt Issues
The Greek debt crisis has again drawn the world’s attention to sovereign debt issues. The Greek government, along with its creditors, is facing difficult choices in how to deal with the large debt load it faces, particularly when viewed in the context of the debt to GDP ratio which is the most common metric used in terms of how nations can handle debt. Interestingly, Greece does not have the highest debt to GDP burden, as shown by the most recent World Bank data. That honor goes to Japan, which faced at debt to GDP ratio of nearly $200$ in 2012, noticeably higher than the Greek ratio of nearly 164%. However, Japan continues to have considerably lower carrying costs than Greece despite this based on market perceptions of the respective risks of default, which have been exacerbated by recent political developments in Greece, including the recent failure to make a payment due the International Monetary Fund on July 2.
