Impact of Strong Dollar on Trade Remains Unclear

The recent devaluation of the Chinese RMB calls new attention to currency swings and the recently strong dollar. The dollar has gained significantly in value as compared to the Euro, Yuan, and other major currencies. This clearly provides advantages to foreign imports and disadvantages U.S. exports, but it is unclear how large and impact this has had thus far.

Recent trade data show that the level of U.S. net exports has not changed substantially even as the value of the dollar has risen. The most recent Census trade data shows that the trade balance in goods and services was -$43.8 billion in June 2015, little changed from June 2011’s -$49.3 billion, which the deficit in goods improved to -$63.5 billion from -$65.5 billion (the difference between the two series is the result of a positive trade balance in services, which currently stands just below $20 billion).

During this same period, despite little change in the U.S. trade balance, the value of the dollar rose from slightly over 95 to 115.1 in the Federal Reserve’s Trade Weighted U.S. Dollar Index (it has subsequently risen to 118.5 as of the August 6, 2015 publication). The impact on trade hasn’t evidenced itself yet, although the rising strength of the U.S. dollar has been offset in whole or part by the large decrease in U.S. net imports of crude oil and petroleum products, which have fallen consistently over the past 10 years, from over 12,000 barrels a day during 2005 to typically less than 5000 barrels a day during 2015, according to Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, with the proportion of imports comprised of petroleum falling significantly in the past year.
