U.S. Coatings Exports Remain Strong

Although the manufacturing sector has long seen substantial trade deficits, the coatings industry has traditionally been a strong net export sector. So far in 2014, U.S. coatings exports have been very strong – according to the Census Bureau’s International Trade Statistics, U.S. exports of coatings through July 2014 were $1.61 billion, while imports totaled $593.6 million. Canada and Mexico are the largest export markets, as shown above, while Canada and Germany are the largest sources of imported coatings. Should this trend continue, the United States is likely to enjoy a net surplus in coatings trade of nearly $2 billion for the full year 2014.
