The recession of 2007-09, which followed the housing boom, hit the construction trades particularly hard. As shown below, the number of people employed construction workers in general, fell significantly, and construction employment generally feel in line with total construction spending.

As can be seen in the above figure, total spending closely tracks employment in this sector, and each shows distinct seasonality. Drilling down to specialty trades, such as painting contractors, one can anticipate that employment, and more specifically, aggregate hours worked, would provide a useful proxy for the amount of money spent on the products used by such specialty contractors.
Paint and wall covering contractors, along with parallel figures for residential remodelers (who also consume paint in their role) and siding contractors is illustrated below. These figures generally moved in tandem, although the relative hours of work accomplished by siding contractors declined in importance relative to the other categories. This appears to confirm the movement of exterior substrates away from siding (and to other substrates, such as stucco or fiber-cement siding).
