As 2019 comes to a close, the National Watermelon Association would like to wish its members, partners and other industry professionals a safe and happy holiday season. As we reflect on the past year for the industry, we would like to provide the readers of the newsbrief a look at the most accessed articles from the year. From Feb. 28: The watermelon industry gave the National Watermelon Association a big "mahalo"—thank you—to the group for its first conference off the mainland in its 105-year history. Executive Director Bob Morrisey said the decision to schedule the convention in Hawaii was a risk, but there's no doubt the membership and allied companies who support the event agreed it was the right choice.

From April 25: The United States Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state and local partners, is investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Carrau illnesses linked to pre-cut melon products. These products contain cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, or may be mixes of some or all of these melons and other pre-cut fruit.

From Feb. 28: Katie Honeycutt is the new National Watermelon Queen. Honeycutt was crowned Feb. 24 during the awards banquet at the National Watermelon Association Conference, which was off the mainland for the first time in 105 years. She will represent the association in promoting watermelons at events ranging from festivals, retail store samplings and even visits with legislators as ambassadors for the industry.
