The provincial government quietly announced a new EMS facility for Peace River recently as a part of a move to consolidate rural ambulance dispatch in Alberta.

Furosemide in the treatment of acute pulmonary edema
emDocs
Congestive heart failure is a common problem in the U.S., with over five million patients carrying the diagnosis and 500,000 new diagnoses each year. Cardiogenic acute pulmonary edema (APE) occurs when blood backs up into the pulmonary vasculature leading to increased oncotic pressure and leakage of fluid into the alveolar spaces. Essentially, patients are drowning. APE patients suffer from both increased after-load: making it more difficult for the left ventricle to function, and increased pre-load. As such, the goals of treatment must be directed at both decreasing cardiac filling pressures (pre-load) and decreasing after-load.
Paramedics' role may grow to help Simcoe County's frail, elderly
Simcoe.com
Expanding paramedics' role in the community could be an effective way to help people from being rushed to hospital, Simcoe County's health and emergency services general manager says. "Ontario is really looking at other ways to provide health care to people living in the community. There's been a lot of information about needs for community services. It's a capacity issue," Jane Sinclair said.
STARS back in air once report filed
Winnipeg Free Press
The Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) helicopter air ambulance service should be back in the air in the very near future, a spokesman said recently.
That depends on when a revised review of 16 cases STARS has handled is submitted.
"Manitobans deserve to have every confidence in the quality of service we offer," STARS spokesman Colin Fast said. "We're committed to making any changes needed to enhance our service in this province."

Why community paramedicine saves both money and lives
The Globe and Mail
Imagine if, instead of transporting patients to hospital, where they will sit for hours in the emergency department waiting for minor — and often routine — treatments, paramedics treated them in their homes. It seems like an eminently sensible approach, but the idea is only now starting to take hold.

Irish College of Paramedics
Irish College of Paramedics
The world of Irish Pre-Hospital Practice has developed significantly over this past number of years. With the advent of Regulation in 2001 and the introduction of a Register and all of the associated changes as a consequence, came vast improvements to the structure, standards and education, in pre-hospital care. Whilst improvements are evident among the practitioner group, the public know little or nothing of our role and function.
Paramedic deplores condition of Route 90
The Nor'Wester
A rural ambulance paramedic says a stretch of Route 90 along the Irish Loop in Newfoundland is so bad that cardiac monitors are practically useless unless the driver pulls over. "To work in this kind of situation, it's hideous," said Nicole Yetman-Ryan, who travels that road regularly on the hour's run to St. John's and back.
