As drug overdose deaths continue to climb in British Columbia, new figures on the use of naloxone, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes, show there has also been a significant increase in drug users being pulled back from the brink.
In 2015, paramedics in Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health authorities administered naxolone 2,030 times, according to B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) statistics.

Funding for a local program that sends paramedics on house calls has been extended for another year.
Jean-Guy Belzile, manager of Nipissing District Emergency Medical, said he was recently notified by the province that the Paramedicine Program, which has operated as a pilot since 2014, will be funded for another year. "It's great news for us in the district," said Belzile, noting the program has been especially helpful for seniors who don't have a family physician.

A medical witness for the defence says she disagrees with what killed a toddler whose parents are on trial for failing to provide the necessaries of life.
Dr. Anny Sauvageau was cross-examined recently by the Crown in the trial of David and Collet Stephan, whose nearly 19-month-old son, Ezekiel, died in March 2012 after being sick for more than two weeks.
Court has heard how his parents gave him natural remedies, including smoothies with hot peppers and horseradish because they thought he had croup and the flu.

Paramedic services in Ontario are mandated by the Ontario government to set their own response time targets.
Frontenac's emergency medical service established its response time targets in 2014, and the annual results are submitted to the Emergency Health Services Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

James Duncan Keats appeared in front of Nova Scotia Supreme Court via video link for his sentencing hearing.
Last December, Keats was found guilty of two sexual assaults that occurred in 2013.

Paramedics in Thunder Bay, ON, are the first in Canada to take part in a wellness program that aims to help them reduce their stress load.
Called "Yoga for First Responders," the city-sponsored program was introduced in December of last year, said Marika Listenmaa, acting superintendent of professional standards at Superior North EMS.
Each week, two classes offer breathing and stress relief exercises to help paramedics deal with stress on the job — and in the office.

According to a District of Muskoka press release, Jeff McWilliam will join the District team as the Chief, Paramedic Services and Emergency Planning. The Chief will play a key role as the District prepares for transition to direct delivery of land ambulance services in Muskoka, and will have oversight of the District's paramedic services and emergency planning team. The transition to direct delivery will have no impact on patient care services to the public.
