Natural disasters may be beyond our control, but there are ways to reduce the risk and the impact of whatever emergency we might face — whether natural or human-induced.
Emergency Preparedness Week (May 1-7, 2016) encourages Canadians to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency while rescue workers help those in urgent need. This special week is a national effort of provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, and Public Safety Canada.

Rural paramedics are being given more responsibilities in B.C. The changes will effect 73 rural communities, giving patients more access to primary care.
Paramedics can now make home trips for basic services like checking blood pressure, helping with diabetes care and assessing medication.
Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. President, Bronwyn Barter, says these new hirings will fill in gaps for these more remote areas.
"In communities right now paramedics are working on a call-out basis. This is actually adding full-time/part-time positions."

The company that operates EHS LifeFlight says Transport Canada agreed more than a decade ago that the helicopter met the intent of safety regulations, and it doesn't know what prompted the agency to raise concerns about hospital helipad landings last month.
Canadian Helicopters says it would have faced fines or had its helicopter grounded if it continued landings at QEII Health Sciences Centre, IWK Health Centre and the Digby General Hospital.

Marie-Julie Cosenzo is daunted by the thought of crossing the bridge into Gatineau.
"Just going to Hull even is very difficult for me. It just brings back too much pain," Cosenzo said.
Cosenzo, who lives in Ottawa and has been a paramedic with the Coopérative des Paramédics de l'Outaouais for almost nine years, hasn't been at work since last fall after responding to a traumatic call. It was for a 17-year-old boy who died by suicide.

The emergency helicopter that flies critically ill patients to helipads at hospitals in Halifax and Digby, N.S., has been banned from rooftop landings under federal regulations, sending the province scrambling to find a replacement chopper that can once again fly patients straight to a hospital's helipad.
Health Minister Leo Glavine said recently that Transport Canada told Emergency Health Services (EHS), which operates the LifeFlight helicopter, that its Sikorsky S-76A doesn't have the certification level required to land on helipads in densely populated areas.

Dan Hunter and his hockey teammates were out for their annual snowmobile trip last March at Namushka Lodge, when an accident left his team captain severely injured and far from a community or highway.
After a day of ice fishing, Hunter and his friends were heading back to the N.W.T. fishing lodge on their sleds, when their team captain, Mike Zorn, hit a series of snow drifts.
"His Ski-Doo was facing straight into the snow about 100 yards from him," says Hunter, who was first on the scene.

When paramedics encounter a patient that unexpectedly becomes violent, safety is on the line for everyone involved. Paramedic Eden Shirley has experienced being punched and kicked by patients in the five years she's worked with Parkland Ambulance.
"We do work a lot with people who are under the influence, whether it's drugs or alcohol," she said.
In Shirley's case, a hypothermic patient didn't know who she was or what was going on and hit her.
