Patients wait up to 12 hours in ambulances amid ER shortages in N.B.

Ambulance New Brunswick has confirmed details from a photo making the rounds on social media of eight ambulances waiting outside the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre, as ERs struggle to keep up with the demand for services.
A spokesperson for Ambulance New Brunswick confirmed that those eight ambulances were stationed outside the emergency room.

Historic hiring by BC EHS set to bring more paramedics to Northern BC

Ornge and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre launch 'Blood on Board'

Ornge, Ontario’s provider of air ambulance and critical care transport services, and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Canada’s largest trauma centre, are pleased to announce Ontario’s first air ambulance ‘Blood on Board’ program.
Beginning August 31, 2021 in Toronto, Ornge paramedics will be capable of carrying blood products from base directly to the scene of a traumatic injury by air and administering them to a patient.

AHS invests $8.3M to hire more full-time paramedics, temporarily

As the province's EMS system struggles to keep up with demand, Alberta Health Services says it is investing $8.3 million to increase full-time employees — temporarily — and will hire more casuals to cover sick time and vacation time.
The money will transition 70 casual positions to temporary full-time positions, while 30 full-time positions in Calgary and Edmonton that were hired temporarily in 2019 will continue.

Burns Lake is 1 of 6 to get full time permanent paramedics

The Burns Lake ambulance station is one of six in northern B.C. where enough full time permanent paramedics will be hired so that there will be someone at the station 24 hours a day, seven days a week to staff one of its ambulances.
Eight paramedics will be needed to ensure the around the clock presence in Burns Lake with the same number also being required at Houston, Vanderhoof, Chetwynd, Fort St James and Fort Nelson to switch all stations to what’s called Alpha status.

Alarming paramedic shortages in rural Manitoba causing burnout, long waits, union says

Rural Manitoba paramedics are blaring their sirens over what their union calls critical staffing shortages that are leading to severe burnout and hours-long wait times for patients.
Every health region outside of Winnipeg is facing staff shortages, but particularly in the Northern and Interlake-Eastern health regions, said Bob Moroz, president of the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals (MAHCP).

Drug poisoning calls reach record number for Peterborough paramedics

Health officials are calling for urgent action to address Peterborough’s opioid crisis as paramedics report responding to a record number of calls for suspected drug poisonings in the first six months of this year.
Recently, Peterborough Drug Strategy reported that between Jan. 1 and June 30, Peterborough County-City Paramedics responded to 244 suspected opioid-related calls — the highest number of calls since monitoring began in 2018.

Man identified after theft of medical supplies from Victoria paramedics

Police say a man has been identified after paramedic gear was stolen in Victoria earlier this month.
The theft occurred on Aug. 6, and Victoria police asked for help identifying a man believed to be connected to the investigation on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, police said the man had been identified.

Local ambulance calls surge 25 per cent in just seven months

Robert Rushworth, Sault Ste. Marie's chief of paramedic services, is serving notice that ambulance calls are increasing faster than he's ever seen before.
"We're up about 25 per cent calls a week since January," Chief Rushworth says.
"What I'm seeing now, from January to June, July and August of this year, is growth in call volume I've never seen before."

Alberta Health Services Emergency Medical Services has terminated the contract of WPD Ambulance to supply service to the Alberta side of Lloydminster.
In an email to MyLloydminsterNow, Alberta Health Services says AHS EMS took the action on August 20, citing that WPD Ambulance has been unable to meet the service needs of the area and has at times been unable to staff three full-time ambulances.
