Additional forms of cancer linked to breast implants, FDA warns

From Sept. 22: The US Food and Drug Administration is warning the public that a small number of cancer cases, including squamous cell carcinoma and other lymphomas, have been linked to scar tissue around breast implants.
These cases are not the same as the cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma linked to breast implants a decade ago, the FDA said in a safety communication.

From Feb. 10: Women do not need to delay their regular mammogram appointment after getting vaccinated against COVID-19, according to new research published Tuesday in Radiology.
This concern first emerged in early 2021, with swollen lymph nodes (axillary adenopathy) appearing after inoculation posing diagnostic challenges for breast imagers.

Possible biological explanation for increased cancer risk in dense breasts

From Nov. 3: The risk of developing breast cancer is higher in what are known as dense breasts, which appear white in mammograms, than in nondense breasts, which appear grey. Researchers have now shown that there are major biological differences dense breasts and nondense breasts. The results suggest that the properties of dense breasts promote cancer growth.

Breast density notification laws: FDA provides updated timeline on rollout

From Oct. 20: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has shared when they anticipate the long-awaited breast density notification rule to roll out. The agency shared that it anticipates the final rule amending portions of the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 will publish before the end of 2022 or by the beginning of 2023.
