2015 SIM Paper Competition
Each year, the Society for Information Management recognizes innovative business initiatives that use IT to drive measurable results. If you have researched an important and successful IT-related business initiative, the SIM 2015 Paper Competition Committee invites you to submit an abstract describing this initiative. The work described must be implemented and it must have had a significant impact on the organization involved. Winning papers will be a collaboration between academics and practitioners. Since SIM's focus is toward executive management, the work should describe an initiative of interest to senior IS executives.

The abstract submission deadline is Friday, May 22. Click here for more information.

CIOs might have a tough job these days, what with the triple threat of cybersecurity, disruption and flat IT budgets, but that doesn't mean they're not loving every minute of the ride. Bill Pratt, senior vice president and chief information officer of SiriusXM, may well have been speaking for the group of all-star CIOs who appeared at the Oracle Industry Connect conference recently when he said, "This period is an incredible time to be in the world of technology because we not only have the analytic capabilities, but we also have the marketing capabilities we can use to deliver promotions, campaigns and pricing, all in real time across multiple channels — from contact centers to mobile devices."

Taking IT reorganizations to the extreme
Get ready for the disappearing IT department. Companies including Zappos, GameStop, Aetna and AccuWeather have restructured IT, sometimes radically, to respond to some harsh economic and technologic forces bearing down on CIOs. Zappos, which has been called "one of the most blissed-out businesses in America," is exploding its entire hierarchy to replace it with what might be the equivalent of a corporate commune. The company spent 2014 reinventing itself as a holacracy, embracing an organizing principle akin to democracy — including a 31-page constitution.

Scaling the PEAKS of competence
By Dr. David Hillson
How can you know if you are competent to perform in your role? Many professional organizations produce competence frameworks that attempt to answer this question. Unfortunately, most of these frameworks are limited to assessing what you know or what you can do. But knowledge and skills are only two of the elements that are required for a person to be competent in a role. To provide a more complete description of competence, try using the PEAKS framework. This defines the factors that separate truly effective individuals from the rest.
