Crowdsourcing.org
Coined by author Jeff Howe in a 2006 Wired article, the term crowdsourcing has certainly gained momentum in recent years. The notion of engaging a crowd, however, has been around for centuries.
In 1714, the British government offered The Longitude Prize worth $4.7 million in today's currency, to anyone who could work out a simple and practical method to determine a ship’s longitude.
