Build a Better Future with SIP Structures
SIPA
A high-performance SIP building envelope is a hug for the planet.
Whether it’s a tiny house or a commercial building of tens of thousands of square feet, the SIP building envelope creates a tightly sealed, extremely energy-efficient structure. A high-performance structure is defined by its ability to outperform the average energy performance metrics of standard homes and buildings. Structural Insulated Panel Association hosts the only entirely SIP project catalogue where users can filter by high-performance and various energy performance ratings.
The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is an energy efficiency inspection designed to create a nationally recognized energy performance metric for builders, architects, homeowners, real estate agents and others. The 2021 national HERS average was 58 whereas a standard stick-built home constructed to the 2006 code averages a score of 100. SIP projects regularly achieve better HERS ratings ranging from 50 to less than 0 (meaning net-zero energy usage), showcasing the extraordinary energy performance of a SIP building envelope. There are over 90 of these showcased in the online SIP project catalog with HERS below 50.
Since 2012, U.S. residential building code has required a blower door test to measure a home’s indoor air leakage rate (see 2012 IECC or newer). By pushing air through the front door and maintaining 50 pascals of pressure, this test evaluates the air change per hour (ACH) levels and pinpoints leakage points throughout the building envelope. A low leakage home is considered a higher quality of construction. Current building codes require a score of 5.0 ACH in warmer, southeast climates and 3.0 ACH in cooler climates. A fully enclosed SIP envelope regularly scores lower than the 3.0 ACH standard making it one of the choice materials for a healthy, high-performing home. There are over 150 of these showcased in the online SIP project catalog searchable by ACH50 performance levels.

AIA's Blueprint for Better Campaign
SIPA
With SIPs in the blueprint, your expertise can influence design for good.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) began the Blueprint for Better campaign in 2021 to engage design professionals at all levels to transform the day-to-day practice of architecture to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just and equitable built environment. Millennial homeowners are increasingly more interested in sustainably built homes, naturally driving this campaign among residential living; however, taking root at the commercial level requires renewed ingenuity.
SIPs can shape the dialogue demonstrating that higher expectations throughout the built environment are possible.
- Choose a building material that is extracted, produced and assembled at minimal environmental cost. SIPs are a sustainable solution.
- Select a material that delivers unparalleled indoor air quality and energy performance. SIPs are a healthy solution.
- Elevate the resilience of our communities by creating structures that will endure climate change realities.
SIPs are a durable building envelope offering protection in the toughest storms.
In conjunction with Blueprint for Better, the AIA’s Architecture and Design Materials Pledge encourages conscientious evaluation of products and finishes. Architects can truly impact GHG reduction goals by considering materials based on extraction practices, embodied and operational carbon as well as impact on the circular economy. This pledge also aligns with the human health and social equity objectives of Blueprint for Better with an emphasis on the how material manufacturing communities are impacted socioeconomically.

The 2022 High Performance Home Under 3,000 sq. ft. Winner
SIPA
This modest, contemporary floorplan harnesses natural light and solar opportunities.
A high-performance home is characterised by its ability to feature eco-efficiency, health, resilience, sustainability and renewable energy at the core of its design. Among SIPA’s Building Excellence Awards categories, the high-performance designation is a shining achievement for builders and designers as well as future occupants. These entries require a RESNET-certified HERS rating and a blower door test proving the structure’s superb performance. This project had an impressively tight 0.4 ACH50 air leakage value from it’s blower door test. Air leakage values of below 0.6 ACH50 are required to achieve Passive certification.
With just 2,000 square feet of conditioned space, this sleek Vancouver, British Columbia home is perched high with long windows to maximize natural light entry. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) ensured a quick construction process and an energy-efficient finished project. This home elevates contemporary design to a passive standard achieving both the U.S. Passive House and Passive House Canada certifications. The landscaping includes trees and vegetation natural to the area and the trees felled to clear the property were incorporated into the home’s siding.
The SIPs for this home were manufactured by Premier SIPs and built by West Eco. Check out full lineup of 2022 Building Excellence Award winners here.

US Homebuilders Say Materials Are Getting Easier to Find
Quartz
The great pandemic lumber shortage that delayed construction and pushed U.S. home prices to record levels is easing up — at least for now.
After months of scrambling to stock up on lumber, more than half of U.S. building material suppliers said in March inventories are back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest Burns Building Product Survey — which covers about 6% of the market for lumber dealers.

White House Works with State, Local Governments to Bolster Building Performance Standards
Building Design + Construction
The former head of the U.S. Green Building Council says the Biden Administration’s formation of the National Building Performance Standards Coalition is a “tremendous” step in the right direction to raise building performance standards in the U.S.
This action, along with an effort to boost sustainability on federal properties, has the “potential to merge federal leadership and fiscal resources with lower governments’ capacities for experimentation and execution,” writes Mahesh Ramanujam, former USGBC CEO. The coalition could achieve much while circumventing gridlock on Capitol Hill, he says.
