SIP Vacation Rental Receives SIPA's 2022 Award
SIPA
A Lake Superior SIP cabin with Angelina’s angles and Pitt’s charm.
The renovation category of SIPA’s Building Excellence Awards is always full of unexpected and creative entries. An opera house, a rustbelt home, a local grocer or a woodworking shop — retrofitting homes or commercial spaces is easy and unobtrusive with retrofit insulated panels (RIPs).
SIPA’s 2022 winning renovation project goes to an early, 70s-kit home along the northern tip of Minnesota that was transformed into a cozy, contemporary, weekend retreat cabin. The SIPs for this renovation project were manufactured by Energy Panel Structures, Inc. and the design was spearheaded by the talented Taiga Design+Build, LLC.
Utilizing the existing A-frame structure allowed the team to retain the historic wood and overlayed it with SIP panels. The high ceilings allow windows to beckon the natural scenery while the energy performance upgrades ensure a comfortable retreat from those biting Northern Minnesota winters.

Manufacturer Spotlight: Extreme Panel Technologies
SIPA
A SIP manufacturer driven by design and powered by innovation.
Extreme Panel Technologies, Inc. began manufacturing structural insulated panels in a 500-square-foot shop in 1992. Because of a growing demand for the SIP product, they built a 10,000-square-foot manufacturing plant and office in 1994. Based out of Cottonwood, Minnesota, this award-winning SIP manufacturer has a family-owned history and “SIPs as its foundational DNA.”
To obtain the highest quality of finished products, a computer-operated CNC machine was installed in 2008. Co-owner and CEO Terry Dieken, focuses his efforts on research to develop new products, increase awareness of SIPs and continue to automate the plant as the market dictates. Dedicated to advancing SIP technology, Terry is also an active member and a past SIPA Board President. Terry's son, Jeremy, runs the day-to-day operations and currently sits on the SIPA Board of Directors and serves as the Chair of the Manufacturer Committee.
With decades of experience and a commitment to superior design with SIPs, it’s no surprise that Extreme consistently delivers award-winning structures. Recognized as high-performance, these projects receive ENERGY STAR, LEED Platinum certifications as well as Zero Energy Ready Home and SIPA’s Building Excellence Awards.

Lumber Suppliers Cut Prices to Increase Sales
Lesprom Network
A few months of struggle between lumber buyers and sellers brought some big price cuts in mid-June. Suppliers had been cutting prices by increments to increase sales volumes, while customers continued to wait as long as possible in hopes that prices might drop further. The trend line of recent decreases matches almost exactly what happened during July and August last year.

How Smart Builders Make Money Before They Ever Break Ground
Jobsite
According to researchers at Arizona State University, preconstruction costs can account for as much as 5% of a project’s total budget, depending on the type and complexity of the project. If we were to apply this number to the global construction market, which is expected to grow to $14 trillion by 2025, approximately $700 billion dollars could be spent annually on preconstruction by the end of 2025.

The Architect's Newspaper
With urgent turning points for mitigating climate change drawing ever nearer, it’s time for the architecture field to take notice — and action. Overcoming the Barriers to Widespread Microgrid Adoption and Sustainable Buildings
Forbes
In 2012, microgrids gained sudden national awareness after the incredibly destructive Hurricane Sandy cut power to millions throughout the Northeast — that is, of course, except for small pockets of communities with backup light and heat available through microgrids. These localized power grids were disconnected from the traditional grid and continued to operate independently through the storm, ensuring safety and a sense of comfort for those benefiting.
