A Tool for Effectively Communicating the Added Value with SIPs
SIPA
Bidding tool designed by Sam Rashkin demonstrates the added value in building with SIPs.
In collaboration with Sam Rashkin, former Department of Energy Chief Architect and author of Housing 2.0: A Disruption Survival Guide, SIPA has published a new tool for SIP manufacturing and building professionals. The True Value Bidding Tool helps demonstrate the added value of a SIP project with every lead that your business encounters. It's an easy way to elaborate on the additional value included in a SIP structure that conveys more than energy performance — it demonstrates the true cost associated with building and the real savings in choosing SIPs.
This interactive tool can be filled out for any project with local project specifications. Contact a SIPA manufacturing member to start the process.
A SIP building envelope requires less time, less jobsite waste, less labor and less operational costs resulting in tremendous added value to every facet of the industry: designer, builder and owner. This tool helps communicate and integrate these value-added points (pictured left) during the sales and bidding process.
Download the True Value Bidding Tool today!
Need a sample spreadsheet? Download a completed example of the tool with real project specifications.
Tell us about your project and a SIPA member will reach out for details.

Fire-Resistant Design Wins 2022 Building Excellence Award
SIPA
This SIP community stops fire by building better designed homes.
This 18-unit duplex community in Sonora, California incorporated SIPs and other measures to meet the realistic needs of occupants on this beautiful hillside. The International Wildland-Urban Interface Code establishes a set minimum standard to reduce the loss of property from wildfire and these earth-toned duplexes exceed this code with SIP technology – for both structural integrity as well as the health and safety of occupants.
Fire suppression design features were considered throughout the structures with attic space being the principal suppression system. An attic without ductwork doesn't provide easy entry for floating hot embers. Other fire-resistant features:
- Excess thermal bridging was eliminated with the use of R-15 batt in the top chord of the truss beneath the R-28 SIPs providing a better sealed R-43 assembly.
- Gable end walls go all the way to the bottom of the SIP panel, which provides all the overhangs without requiring additional framing.
- Exteriors are all Hardi-plank, Hardi-panel and Hardi-trim for fire-proof exteriors while the roofs are all steel standing-seam roofing.
- The combination of Hardi-Siding and Hardi-Soffit along with all the tempered glass in the windows and the steel roof provide a fireproof exterior shell.
With solar panels on the garages only, these units will completely power themselves and their owners' cars (two cars per unit at 10,000 miles per car per year). Once the entire south-facing roofs are fitted with solar panels, these 18 residential units will power themselves and an addition 54 average existing homes in the neighborhood.
This project is the well-deserved winner of SIPA's 2022 Building Excellence Award in both the multi-family category as well as the overall high-performance residential winner. The panels for this project were manufactured by PremierSIPs and the project was designed by Zero Energy Plans, LLC.

Master SIP Builder Spotlight: Construction Partners, LLC
SIPA
A high-performance home builder with 30 years of SIP experience.
Construction Partners has been building homes in Minnesota and South Dakota since 1974, and they began their energy-efficient SIP legacy in 1992. Whether they are building, remodeling or beautifying a home, they are committed to affordability and value for the customer. Each SIP home they have crafted far exceeds building code energy performance standards showcasing the extremely airtight abilities of a well-built SIP envelope.
This 2018 multi-family residence (pictured right) in Elkton, South Dakota is a whopping 10,000 sq. ft. Despite the huge floorplan, the project achieved a 28 HERS Index score and 0.10 ACH50 or blower door test result. The DOE recognized this home as a Zero Energy Ready Home and it received ENERGY STAR and EPA's Indoor AirPLUS certifications.
Building an airtight home is not just about conserving energy but it also impacts occupant health. Indoor air quality in a SIP home, especially a Construction Partners' build, is more comfortable and requires less grandiose mechanical ventilation systems. In summary, SIPs reduce energy needs, save occupants money, and require smaller HVAC units all while being the healthier choice for occupants.

In the Race to Meet Net-Zero Goals, Building Owners Struggle to Find the Right Starting Line
Forbes
Most building owners and property managers recognize the need to develop and initiate a net-zero action plan, but a confusing array of regulations, pathways and metrics — constantly changing and different from state-to-state — are holding up progress.
A net-zero commitment is an aim to become carbon neutral (removing or offsetting the same amount of carbon that is emitted into the atmosphere) by a certain date.

The Link Between Idle Time and Sustainable Operation
For Construction Pros
What’s your guess as to how much the building and construction industry contributes to global carbon emissions? 5%? 10%? 20%? According to the 2019 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, it’s 39%. That’s a huge number. Granted, most of these CO2 emissions (28%) come from keeping buildings operational once they’re constructed. But that leaves 11% attributed directly to the construction process itself.

Why June's Upbeat Jobs Report Isn't Necessarily Positive for Construction
Construction Dive
While additional jobs are usually viewed as a sign of industry strength, construction economists found reasons for concern.
“This does nothing, however, to dim the risk of recession,” said Associated Builders and Contractors Chief Economist Anirban Basu in a release about the numbers.

What Is the Environmental Impact of Each Building Material?

Food pyramids are familiar to all of us. They are visual guides that show us the proportions of foods that we should supposedly eat on a daily basis, in order to stay healthy. Composed of a series of layers with different food types–such as grains, flour, fats, vegetables and others, at the base are the foods that should be consumed in larger quantities.
