The Goss Opera House Roof Renovation, Classic Winner
SIPA
This historic theater won top honors in the 2021 Building Excellence Awards in the Renovations category
The Goss Opera House (aka: Opera House SIP Roof Renovation Watertown SD) slowly went dark after the Depression and nearly 70 years after closing, a non-profit group rallied thousands to help preserve the history of the Goss Opera House and bring life back to the space. After more than a year of reconstruction and renovation the 131-year-old iconic building has been restored to its former glory. Although not a visible part of the renovation, the SIPs roof system was the answer to many of this building's issues.
In a design by TSP, Inc. of Watertown, South Dakota, Enercept SIPs provided over 22,320 sq. ft. of 12” SIP roof panels and Hasslen Construction of Ortonville, Minnesota, completed the total roof replacement. The Goss is an 1880's Opera House with a stage, balcony and box seats, used as an event venue for concerts, weddings, plays, dances and other events. Enclosing the roof as quickly as possible was critical to shorten the time of exposure of the interior of the opera house to the elements. Workers were able to make timely internal repairs to a building that had been severely damaged by leaks from the old roof.

Frequently Asked Question: Are SIPs Accepted by Building Codes?
SIPA
SIP construction is recognized by the International Code Council body of building codes.
SIP construction is recognized by the International Code Council body of building codes, which are used by most jurisdictions in the U.S. SIPs are also approved by the State of Florida for High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ).
For residential buildings, specific construction practices for SIP wall systems are included in Section R610 of the 2018 and 2021 International Residential Code. For applications beyond the scope of Section R610, the building inspector will typically require a licensed engineer or architect to approve the building plans prior to construction. An engineer’s approval is always required in high wind areas, high seismic zones and commercial buildings.

Funding Wood Forensics Could Curb Corruption in Timber Trade and Help Save Global Forests From Illegal Trade
Traffic
Wood forensic science has the potential to detect illegal trade of products along timber supply chains which would protect one of humanity’s greatest assets for biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Governments need to listen to calls from organizations and within the international timber industry for funding along with incentivizing global legal trade framework for tropical forest supply chain governance.” TRAFFIC’s Senior Forest Advisor Chen Hin Keong.

4 Experts on Why Sustainable Mass Timber is the Green Future of Building
World Economic Forum
The biggest new idea in sustainable building is also one of the oldest construction materials around: timber. But this isn’t ordinary wood. Cross-laminated timber, as it’s known, is arguably the first major structural innovation since the invention of reinforced concrete more than 150 years ago.
