Netherlands Leads in Open Access, but some Science Publications Still Not Available for All

Three out of ten articles by Dutch scientists ended up behind the paywall last year and could not be accessed for free by outsiders. The Netherlands is leading the way, but the goal has not been achieved.
Last year, 71% of scientific articles written by Dutch researchers could be read free of charge for everyone, according to a census by the Rathenau Institute. However, there is an upward trend. In the previous year, 66% had been published in Open Access.

Idaho Universities Team up on New Digital Collections Library

Libraries at Idaho’s colleges and universities are joining forces to put their digital collections all in one place.
The Digital Library of Idaho lets anyone search through nearly 200 collections, like photos from the territorial days in the 19th century or salmon migration reports.
Ben Hunter is the dean of the University of Idaho Library and chairs the Network of Idaho Academic Libraries, which is behind the initiative.

Colorado Adds New Discovery Tool for Open Access Research

Journalists, policymakers and members of the public will have an easier time finding research published by CU Boulder faculty thanks to a new integration in CU Experts that automatically provides links to open access versions of articles from CU Scholar, the University Libraries’ institutional repository, and other OA locations via a third-party open database called Unpaywall.

NASA and ESA publicly released a revolutionary open-source science tool for analyzing Earth science data in the cloud – the Multi-Mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform. MAAP provides seamless access to NASA and ESA Earth science data and is a model for open-source science collaboration and analysis. As part of MAAP’s initial supported area of emphasis on aboveground biomass, it is the host platform for the first globally harmonized assessment of aboveground carbon – information that is vital for managing global climate change.
