New Zealand National Library Hits Pause on Internet Archive Deal

The New Zealand National Library has halted plans to export 600,000 books to an overseas-based online archive after sustained criticism from authors, publishers, copyright holders and the National Party. In an emailed statement, the library said it was “reconsidering” plans to ship the books from its Overseas Published Collections “in light of concerns raised by interested parties, including issues associated with copyright”.

eBook Aggregators Face Licensing Questions from Congress

A Democratic senator launched an investigation into how publishers license ebooks to libraries, calling on nine major ebook aggregators to provide details on the licensing agreements they make with libraries.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), along with Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), sent letters demanding that aggregators like Overdrive and EBSCO provide them with examples of standard ebook licensing agreements for every major publisher they work with, including Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster.

Researchers at Risk in Afghanistan Need Better Tools to Find Help

One of the main charities helping scientists to leave countries experiencing conflict has seen a spike in enquiries. Last week, the Council for At-Risk Academics, which is based in London, said it had received 40 requests from people intent on leaving Afghanistan. It was 98 in the previous week. This is a record for the organization — its highest previous peak was 20 a week in 2016, during the Syria crisis, says CARA’s executive director Stephen Wordsworth.
