Take action today to protect advertising expenditures and the promotional products industry
SPPA
Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, released tax reform draft bills earlier this week that address many areas of potential tax reform. One particular item in the bill directly affects the promotional products industry and its operation as an effective advertising medium. The bill, if passed, would allow only 50 percent of advertising expenses to be deducted in the current year with the remaining 50 percent amortized over 5 years. Currently, advertising expenditures are 100 percent deductible in the year the expenditures are incurred.

10 killer promotions from some of the world's best-known brands
Everything PR
Some might say that promotional products such as t-shirts, pens and tote bags aren't made with quality materials — the product's purpose is thrown out the door when cheap products are used to represent a brand. Promo materials don’t have to be super cheap, though. These 10 popular names from the entertainment, business, fashion and food worlds have all offered excellent products that both promoted their brand and proved useful to consumers.
The complete list of NCAA bowl game swag
Promo Marketing
It's the most wonderful time of the year. No, not the holidays — the start of college football bowl season, a 35-game slate beginning Dec. 21 and stretching almost a week into the new year. And while the games should be killer, they're nothing compared to the swag athletes will receive for participating. Sure, the NCAA has had its share of hangups of late — especially where promotional products are concerned — but bowl season giveaways are one thing the organization gets right. Just look at some of this stuff.

We foresee required social activity, an emphasis on Twitter and mobile strategy, and a closer relationship with marketing.
Study suggests online sales tax bill could leave billions untaxed
The New York Times
Proponents of a federal law to force online retailers to collect sales tax should probably ratchet down their hopes and expectations. That, at least, is one conclusion to take from a new study sponsored by the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy. The study found that if the proposed federal law excludes small sellers from having to collect sales taxes online, as many favor, it will probably leave at least 40 percent of all online sales untaxed. As a result, the law would not do as much as some may hope to support traditional Main Street businesses or to increase revenues for strapped municipal governments.
Amazon's approach to social media
Josic
Amazon breaks the rules when it comes to social media, yet they are getting big results from their social networks. In the world of social media marketing, brands steer away from using their social networks for purely promotional posts. Instead, they offer information, articles, funny pieces, offer contests or ask seemingly random questions to spark a conversation. Amazon really doesn’t do any of this. Nearly all of their Facebook posts are purely promotional with links to products.

Small business: 3-D printing doubled my sales
Fox News
For New York City-based jewelry company American Pearl, competing with overseas companies on cost was a major challenge, due to cheaper international labor.
That is, until they got the Solidscape T76.
With the Solidscape, a $45,000 3-D printer, American Pearl CEO Eddie Bakhash says his company has been able to double its sales in the past year. 3-D printing allows American Pearl to offer customization of its rings purchased online — at an affordable price point. On the company’s website, shoppers can view 3-D renderings of rings, customized with their selection of metals, gems, pearls and engraving.
