Greetings from the Certification Team!
As you are all aware, we have been busy bees getting everything set up for IMSH 2023 in Orlando, Florida. My certified friends, if you are attending IMSH, please be sure to stop by SSH central to see me, especially if you haven’t received your CHSE or CHSOS pin. For those of you not yet certified, I invite you to visit me at SSH central as well so I can answer all of your questions and concerns about the tests.
Speaking of the tests, we have wrapped the first part of the Practice Analysis process and hosted meetings in Florida, Singapore, and Milan with wonderful Subject Matter Experts from around the world who were engaged in valuable discussions about the knowledge, skills, and abilities of those working in an educator or operations specialist role.

The Most Comprehensive Virtual Reality Healthcare Curriculum: 'The Simulation Learning System with VR' by Elsevier & SimX
Elsevier’s leading content and SimX’s best-in-class VR simulation engine power the most comprehensive VR healthcare curriculum ever developed–the Simulation Learning System with Virtual Reality (SLS with VR). Building on the Simulation Learning System’s evidence-based simulation scenarios and activities, SLS with VR features 100 virtual reality scenarios covering everything from home health to mass casualty, leveraging the latest virtual reality technology to provide students with a safe, immersive, and realistic virtual environment where they can gain valuable hands-on patient care experience and enhance clinical judgment skills.
“This is one of those rare opportunities when we can leverage technology to make something cheaper, easier, and more effective,” said SimX CEO Dr. Ryan Ribeira. “VR sim sets up anywhere, which means instructors can integrate sim into lectures, small group sessions, even send students home with headsets so they can work together in multiplayer simulation scenarios facilitated by an instructor remotely.”

Did we learn anything during the pandemic about the need to diversify our training?
Do we still think that the only way to train healthcare professionals is in person? While face-to-face training is valuable, it is an expensive activity that tends to provide the most impactful learning when learners are well prepared. Preparation is key, but a challenge. When will we heed the call to provide flexible ways to help learners understand content before they enter a training facility? Can you afford to be alone on this? Additionally, don’t forget about reinforcing knowledge, skills, and abilities after face-to-face training.
Healthcare training and education exist in a new world where learners rely upon their phones and other mobile devices more consistently, regularly, and reliably than ever before. Access to scenarios and cases that allow learners to demonstrate their knowledge and measure their confidence before engaging in face-to-face training is becoming a requirement, not a luxury.

Taking patient safety to new heights using aviation best practices
Though worldwide air traffic has increased substantially over the past 20 years, aviation-related fatalities have dropped significantly, from 450 per year to 250, a decrease of about 56%. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for error-related casualties in healthcare. According to McKinsey 2020 data, medical errors kill approximately 250,000 people annually in the United States alone. That’s the equivalent of two commercial jets crashing every day.

Building patient simulators that represent patient populations
University of Miami Health
Most people know about simulation mannequins. If you haven't practiced on one, you would probably recognize the fake patients that are used in disaster drills and medical training to help students, physicians, nurses, first responders, and other providers learn how to diagnose and treat "plastic" patients before they practice on real ones.

Current trends in mini-clinical evaluation exercise in medical education
Cureus
There has been emerging evidence supporting the mini-clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX) in various clinical specialties and settings. However, we need more clarity regarding the applicability of mini-CEX as an optimal assessment tool. Consequently, it has not been implemented on a wider scale, and several clinical specialties are yet to explore the benefits of mini-CEX. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to investigate the publication trends of mini-CEX.
