.FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
Friends, it’s a great day to be in healthcare simulation!
We’re heading into June, which means we’re only months away from SimOps (July), Healthcare Simulation Week (September), and both the SSH Research Summit and IMSH 2023 (January)! That’s IN-CRED-I-BLE!
There is so much to look forward to, to learn, and to celebrate! Before we get there, however, I want to point out and celebrate something else deserving.
SSH SimSeries — one of SSH’s best educational innovations to come out of the pandemic – recently passed two full years in existence and more than 115 episodes. In that time, it has grown into one of SSH’s most consistent, all-encompassing, education resources.
A bit of backstory …
Early in 2020, information was at a premium as healthcare professionals across all sectors scrambled for ways to respond effectively to the incredible number of new stressors on themselves and their organizations.
Volunteer leadership and the SSH Education Department quickly mobilized and formed a community-supporting, FREE solution to meet the need for real-time, global, idea and strategy sharing as the entire industry battled a new health threat. In short, everyone everywhere needed to know what was working best … and they needed to know NOW.
That led to Monday, March 30, 2020, and the first SimSeries: “SSH Open Forum Discussion: Simulation Centers Respond to COVID-19, which saw an amazing 502 registrants. That momentum carried through the rest of the year, which saw 75 more webinars — over just nine months — and nearly 8,500 registrants. By all measures, SimSeries was a gigantic, need-filling success.
Since that time, the webinar has settled into its customary Monday place and evolved its discussions past only pandemic-related topics. For example:
“Re-Design: Ensuring Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Your Simulation Scenarios”
“Simulation-Based Teaching to Improve Care for Transgender Patients”
“SimOps: Video Production Basics for Simulation”
“Teach Clinical Deterioration Response: Transitioning to a Virtual Format”
“Enhance Your Resume and CV: Two-Part Workshop for Operations Specialists”
“What’s Surface Tension Got to Do With It? – An Exploration of Burnout”
And, registration response continues to strongly support the content, considering the “Re-Design” SimSeries, held April 18, 2022, saw 184 live attendees!
The best news, if you’ve missed any past SimSeries or want to revisit them, recordings are available after the live session! And, for those who want or need it, individuals can earn 1.0 IPCE credit hours per recording ($25 for SSH members; $50 for non-members).
Do yourself a quick favor and check out the SSH SimSeries page. You can register for upcoming webinars as well as view the full archive — ALL FOR FREE.
SSH SimSeries is a strong testament to SSH’s purpose “… to serve a global community of practice enhancing the quality of healthcare.”
It also rings true to the SSH mission as it “serves our members by fostering education, professional development, and the advancement of research and innovation; promotes the promotion of healthcare simulation through standards and ethics; and champions healthcare simulation through advocating, sharing, facilitating, and collaborating.”
We’ll see you at a free SimSeries soon!

.INDUSTRY NEWS
Medical simulation handiwork just might have you in stitches
Gonzaga University
Cara Smith might be the most ingenious member of the nursing department. Thinking there had to be a better way to teach suturing to graduate nurse practitioner students and suture removal to undergrad BSNs, she went to Hollywood for the answer. Knowing that practicing suturing on chicken legs wasn’t the most sanitary, economical, ecologically sound or realistic method to teach stiches, Smith, Gonzaga’s simulations operation specialist, found a company that crafts things for the movie industry. She found a section on its website for medical simulation.

The Metaverse has the power to improve healthcare, and it has already begun
Yanko Design
It doesn’t have to be all fun and games in the Metaverse, especially when its best use cases are the ones that need a different reality the most.
Thanks to a few companies that have large marketing machines, the word “Metaverse” has become muddled in hype and controversy. While the current use of the coined word might be new to our ears, the technologies that empower it have been around for quite some time now. And they aren’t always used for games or entertainment, even if that is what everyone thinks these days.

Robot baby introduced in North East to help in training for emergencies involving children
ITV
A robot baby has been introduced to paediatric education across the North East to help train in treating critically ill babies more effectively.
The SimBaby creates more realistic scenarios of treating an infant. When used in training, it is hoped it will equip healthcare professionals with better skills before treating a real child.
The charity Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) which supports the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital has donated the simulator.

One of the most important objectives during labor and delivery is recognizing the potential risks to mother and baby. Simulation can help build competency to ensure teams and individuals deliver high-quality care for both patients, effectively manage adverse events, and positively impact patient outcomes, while reducing claims. We have compiled resources to help those in the simulation community address these critical areas including on-demand webinars on obstetric emergencies and OB claims, articles highlighting new guidelines and clinical studies, and more.
