.THE PULSE — Your weekly update from SSH Staff
During Healthcare Simulation Week 2022, I had the distinct pleasure of attending meetings with representatives of several of the SSH Affiliate Organizations from across the globe.
SSH Affiliates enjoy many benefits that help them build strong relationships within the healthcare simulation community while creating broader awareness of their organizations. Benefits range from personal invitations to events to complimentary ad space in Simulation in Healthcare.
Working together, SSH and its affiliates are committed to advancing the field of healthcare simulation. Additional information about SSH Affiliates can be found here.
I was completely blown away by the work being done by our partner organizations across the globe.
It was encouraging to hear that many groups are beginning to hold successful in person events once again. Several groups have done work in translating the SSH Code of Ethics and the Healthcare Simulation Dictionary into their native languages.
Many organizations have expanded their virtual education offerings to both students and simulation educators. A lot of important work is being done with respect to advocacy and raising awareness and the importance of healthcare simulation at the federal government level.
This work ties to the SSH Strategic plan by developing and pursuing an advocacy agenda with health systems, insurers, professional associations, select government agencies, industry, specialty groups and patient-based associations.
Each year at IMSH, SSH hosts a celebration honoring our Affiliated organizations that will be renewing their agreements or signing a new agreement. We are so excited to be honoring at least 15 organizations in Orlando in 2023!
If you are interested in learning more about having your organization join the list of SSH Affiliates, please email me at agrossman@ssih.org!
And, one more really exciting, important note!
SSH is proud to announce that as of July 2022, it began offering tiered membership pricing grouped by country income levels as defined by the World Bank. This initiative is also a huge step in the SSH Strategic Plan that includes advancing simulation in healthcare globally.
Additional information about this new pricing structure, as well as a list of countries in each tier, can be found here.
Until next time!
Ashley Grossman
SSH Interim Director of Membership

Pioneering the use of virtual reality in safeguarding training
To ensure a family-focused approach to safeguarding, Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust purchased virtual-reality headsets and used them to deliver safeguarding training. These allow participants to experience various scenarios, enabling them to think beyond the presenting patient and identify opportunities to safeguard family members who are vulnerable. After attending training, participants reported better knowledge and made more referrals for at-risk children of adult patients.

Innovative telehealth education for Hawai'i nursing students
University of Hawai'i News
A new telehealth toolkit is helping to train the future healthcare workforce across the state. A $130,000 innovation grant supported the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing (NAWSON)’s creation of a telehealth training toolkit that is culturally appropriate, immersive and experiential for healthcare providers and students, so they can provide high quality team-based healthcare.

Redesigning simulation-based learning environments to promote DEI and cultural humility
Macy Foundation
The use of simulation in nursing and medical education has been a useful teaching modality for many years, but with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for simulation intensified. As with so many aspects of health professions education, we are now at a point in the pandemic where we have the opportunity to reexamine the way in which simulation-based education is delivered and seek opportunities for improvement.

PA Medicine students use virtual reality to get 'real life' experience
University of Lynchburg
First-year PA Medicine student Adriane Strawn had never experienced virtual reality before she enrolled in the Master of PA Medicine program at the University of Lynchburg. Since her first month on campus, however, she and other students in her cohort have been using VR simulations to learn how to treat their future patients.

In a study of more than 2,000 students who completed Shadow Health's Health Assessment Digital Clinical Experiences™, we found that 74% of students significantly increased their clinical judgment skills. With our virtual preceptor and guidance provided along the way, these students asked deeper questions to uncover the patient’s clinical situation.

Micro-robots, smart toilets, and 3D bioprinted organs: The future of healthcare
Pharmaceutical Technology
It is the year 2030. You have just received the results from your whole genome sequencing test, offered through your public health provider, and discovered that you have a 75% chance of developing a rare form of cancer. But you are not panicking; your genomic data was automatically uploaded, with your permission, to your electronic health record (EHR), which is fully secured with blockchain technology.

Last year, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) dramatically re-envisioned the field of nursing education, releasing an updated version of “Essentials,” a new framework for the development of nursing curricula, which outlines a competency-based learning model and accounts for the role of education throughout a nurse’s entire professional career. Requiring nursing graduates to demonstrate their competency gives students a greater sense of responsibility and bridges the gap between study and practice. Virtual simulations remove physical barriers to education like location and limited on-site clinical opportunities and can also play a significant role in closing the skills gap.

New technologies in healthcare
The European Sting
Progress in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is shaping more and more the healthcare domain. ICTs adoption provides new opportunities, as well as discloses novel and unforeseen application scenarios. As a result, the overall health sector is potentially benefited, as the quality of medical services is expected to be enhanced and healthcare costs are reduced, in spite of the increasing demand.
