.THE PULSE — Your weekly update from SSH Staff
Hello, friends!
It’s a great day to be in Healthcare Simulation! And, on that note, it’s a great day to consider a career path that involves joining the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Staff!
Currently, SSH has two open positions and is accepting applications until this Friday, October 10, 5 p.m. Eastern Time (U.S.): Education Coordinator and Membership Coordinator. Both positions are fully remote (SSH is a fully remote association!), and you would have the opportunity to join our full-time staff that works every day at providing our SSH members with the best member experience possible!
Want more information about either or both positions? Click here and submit your application!
HEALTHCARE SIMULATION WEEK THANK YOU
Looking back for just a moment, how awesome was Healthcare Simulation Week 2022?!
SSH pumped out 12 (!) free webinars in five days, including overnight ones (in my time zone anyways!), so that we could provide content closer to peak times for international audiences. Other highlights from the week included: nearly 500 pins on the official participation map; nearly 60 entries - and more than 5,500 votes – in the #hcsimweek22 video contest!
That all was in addition to the amazing posts we saw from all of you on social media. Make no mistake, the world saw healthcare simulation in full color because of your efforts! And so, I would like to publicly thank our Healthcare Simulation Week working group for its vital efforts in helping bring the entire campaign to life!
My sincerest thank you to: Amy Cowperthwait (Chair); Kellie Bryant; Asit Misra; Shannon DiMarco; Heidi Fedak; Helen Hanson; and Christie Angino!
It was a pleasure to work with you all this year!
IMSH EARLY BIRD DEADLINE: OCT. 20
A quick reminder that IMSH 2023 registration is open and Early Bird registration ends October 20! Register before the deadline and you’ll save $200! If you need a little help in explaining “why IMSH?”, make sure you download the “How to show you really NEED to attend!” Justification Toolkit!
There are pitch templates, budget worksheets, and more to help you get the approval you need!
And, a little peek behind the IMSH 2023 curtain… We welcomed and heard your feedback on past years’ event apps. We will have a new event app for attendees this year! Powered through CVENT, the app will allow a much more robust attendee and exhibitor user experience.
We’re excited for it and will have it available in December ahead of IMSH!
With that, back to the logistics lab, and we’ll talk to you again soon!
Curtis Kitchen, CAE
SSH Director of Marketing

3 ways the metaverse will change healthcare
Venture Beat
Dr. Justin Barad recalls times when he or colleagues would do quick Google searches in the middle of a procedure as a refresh, or to bone up on a surgery they had never performed before. Or, being asked to assess his surgical proficiency by playing the classic game “Operation” (for the record, he was able to do it without getting buzzed).

Clinical simulation training gives trainees experience
VA News
For generations, the model of “See one, do one, train one” has been a hallmark in health care training. But simulation training is changing that. The new model is “See one, simulate, simulate, simulate, do one, then train one.” This is a training plan that gives health professions trainees needed experience and expertise before they care for a patient.

Simulation training is vital in nursing education and addresses the shortage of nurses
HIT Consultant
Ebbs and flows in the need for nurses and the number of students entering nursing programs are common, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused a more severe nursing shortage than has been previously experienced. At the height of the pandemic, nursing schools suspended in-person classes and were essentially closed. At the same time, many experienced nurses chose early retirement. These factors came together to create the global nursing shortage we are currently facing.

Hot topics in nursing: How simulation saved graduation
CU Anschutz
In March 2020, COVID-19 forced university students around the country to quarantine at home and learn online. That was a disaster for healthcare students who could no longer practice in clinics and earn the hours required to graduate. Faculty at the University of Colorado College of Nursing had to pivot. They expanded simulation training for students to practice with lifelike mannequins, virtual reality, task trainers, and other methods to complete their clinical rotations and earn their degrees.

Debriefing is a critical component of the learning process. As more institutions incorporate simulation to provide learners a safe and risk-free environment in which to practice their skills, debriefing has also gone virtual. Research has shown that asynchronous virtual debriefing sessions can be just as effective as in-person debriefing. To ensure your students get as much from a virtual debriefing experience as possible, read on for six considerations from Dr. Laura Gonzalez, Sentinel U Vice President of Clinical Learning Resources and current INACSL President.
