Showing is not doing: Using virtual reality to train medical professionals
Infection Control Today
Learning medical techniques can come in many forms, watching, hands-on, reading, and now…virtual reality (VR) training. Other industries are also using VR training because using VR, the training is in a safe environment for both the individual in the training, but also for the patients in their care.

Breaking ground on a new era of medical education
University of Utah Health
March 16, 2020, is a day we’ll never forget. It’s the day we moved all medical students out of hospitals and clinics. In response to COVID-19, learning medicine suddenly became virtual. And in-person clinical training temporarily stopped.
Two months later, students returned to clinical settings at a critical moment. They helped with patient care when our health system was under tremendous strain.
Our resilient medical school community rallied together to weather this storm. We made sure every student completed their requirements and graduated on time. Navigating these circumstances caused us to reflect. “If we had the chance to start over, how would we change medical education?”

Doctors coordinate demonstration and billboards to urge Brown University Board of Trustees to replace animals in deadly medical training
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit of more than 17,000 doctor members, is appealing to Brown University’s governing body, the Corporation, for improvements to medical training in the joint Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital emergency medicine residency program. Synchronizing an in-person protest, five area billboards, and a letter directly to the board of trustees, the organization employed multiple tactics to get their message — that the use of live pigs should be replaced with human-relevant training — to leadership at Brown.

Robopill drills through mucus to deliver drugs
IEEE Spectrum
Mucus plays a key role in protecting the body from harm, preventing potentially dangerous substances from reaching the gastrointestinal system. But it also makes it virtually impossible to give certain medications orally, including insulin. That means people with diabetes must regularly inject insulin, which is unpleasant and can cause people with diabetes to be inconsistent in taking their medication.

Debriefing is a critical component of the learning process. As more institutions incorporate simulation to provide learners a safe and risk-free environment in which to practice their skills, debriefing has also gone virtual. Research has shown that asynchronous virtual debriefing sessions can be just as effective as in-person debriefing. To ensure your students get as much from a virtual debriefing experience as possible, read on for six considerations from Dr. Laura Gonzalez, Sentinel U Vice President of Clinical Learning Resources and current INACSL President.
