From the Desk of the Director of Accreditation
Hello, everyone! It's that season of the year when time seems to be in short supply and our lives feel busier than ever with holidays, semesters ending, and everyone wrapping up the calendar year.
So, if you're stressing about getting your SSH Accreditation application submitted amidst all of that, please accept the gift of time. SSH Accreditation is changing its deadlines for application submission. Beginning now, the new deadlines will be February 15 and July 15, annually.
Programs seeking Provisional or Full SSH Accreditation for the first time are welcome to apply at either deadline. Programs that are already SSH Accredited and are seeking SSH Reaccreditation should plan to submit by the July 15 deadline.
Preparing your application
As you prepare your Program's application, there are some other important details to keep in mind.
For example, make sure you're using the most up-to-date documents. The SSH Accreditation Standards are posted publicly on the SSH website, along with their corresponding Companion Documents (an excellent resource!). These documents have been written by SSH Accreditation Program Reviewers to provide greater detail on information that can be shared in an application to demonstrate how a program is meeting SSH Accreditation Standards.
Click here to access the Provisional SSH Accreditation Standards and Companion Documents.

Need more guidance? Use an Accreditation Online Course!
If you have read the Standards and Companion Documents but feel like your Program could use additional guidance, you might consider enrolling in an Accreditation Online Course. These courses are offered on all five areas of SSH Accreditation and take place over the course of a few weeks. Within these courses, you'll learn more about the components of the Accreditation process as well as how to identify your Program's strengths and weaknesses as you prepare your Program's application.
More details on the Accreditation courses and a link to register can be found here.
Ready to Submit?
Once you are ready to submit your Program's application, you'll do so through an online submission portal. You can find a link to the submission portal by visiting the web page of the type of Accreditation your Simulation Program plans to seek.
For Provisional Accreditation, click here. You will find the link to the portal under the heading that says, "How to Apply for Provisional Accreditation."
For Full Accreditation, click here. You will find the link to the portal under the heading that says, "Apply for SSH Accreditation."
Of course, if you have any questions throughout the application preparation and submission process, we're here to help! Please reach out to accreditation@ssih.org with your inquiries.
We'll talk to you soon!

Adult exploration learning through clinical high-fidelity simulation
Institute for the Future of Education
The physical examination allows healthcare professionals to obtain data related to the health condition of their patients. This exam begins with a global assessment and then a focused exploration to know the specific aspects of each person. This article addresses the physical examination of adults when they pass from pediatric to adult consultation. At this stage, the physical exam gathers data through inspection, palpation, auscultation, and percussion. To care for adults, nurses require a high level of knowledge and technical skills.

Brain implants could be the next computer mouse
Technology Review
In a 12-by-20-foot room at a skilled-nursing facility in Menlo Park, California, researchers are testing the next evolution of the computer interface inside the soft matter of Dennis DeGray's motor cortex. DeGray is paralyzed from the neck down. He was hurt in a freak fall in his yard while taking out the trash and is, he says, "as laid up as a person can be." He steers his wheelchair by puffing into a tube.

How telemedicine in the operating room will transform surgery
Fast Company
Throughout the history of modern surgery, training has been accomplished as a one-to-one apprenticeship in the operating room. High-volume surgical training programs offer the best opportunities to see surgery and experience rare cases. However, the challenge is most surgical training programs only take a handful of applicants per year.
