Students from Clearview and Avon Lake high schools donned clean room coveralls to get a behind-the-scenes look at operations at Cleveland Clinic Avon’s campus Wednesday morning.
Five students from each school spent most of their day touring the hospital, following a faux patient and fellow classmate’s journey through admissions, to a makeshift operating room, to post-op and beyond as part of a student experience program at the hospital.

in “The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing” revealed that new nurses scoring within the “acceptable” range on the Performance-Based Development System (PBDS) test — which evaluates a nurse’s ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and respond safely when providing patient care — fell from 23% in 2015 to 9% in 2020. The issues arising from unprepared nursing graduates is being exacerbated by the nursing shortage, as hospitals hire LPNs or ADNs for jobs that higher-level nurses typically take on. Virtual clinical simulations can provide hospitals a pathway to remedy the skills gap while filling short-term labor demands.

Development and evaluation of a virtual reality mechanical ventilation education program for nursing students

Since COVID-19 limits safe clinical practice settings, virtual reality emerged as an alternative to practical education. Using VR simulation to learn mechanical ventilation is rare in nursing education. This study developed a VR simulation program for mechanical ventilation care and evaluated its effects. We adopted a quasi-experiment design. Participants were fourth-year students across nursing colleges in South Korea.

Idaho State University
The Health Occupations Simulation Lab features seven simulated hospital rooms and two clinical rooms that resemble a doctor’s office or urgent care clinic. The area also contains multiple classrooms and control rooms where students can watch their peers perform as instructors remotely operate advanced manikins that can breathe, bleed and even talk.
