.THE PULSE — Your weekly update from SSH Staff
It’s that season of the year when time seems to be in short supply, but our lives feel busier than ever as holidays approach, semesters come to an end, and we wrap up 2022.
As I look back and reflect upon this past year, I am both humbled and amazed at the accomplishments achieved by SSH Accreditation. And, in the spirit of the holiday season, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of those who have served SSH Accreditation over the years and contributed to its success.
For starters, since its inception in 2010, I am beyond proud to announce that SSH has accredited over 250 programs internationally! This year alone, the SSH Accreditation department received 72 application submissions.
A special thanks must go out to all of the SSH members who volunteer their time to serve as SSH Accreditation Reviewers. We currently have 87 reviewers, and we continue to grow that number annually. It goes without saying that we couldn’t have accomplished any of this without you!
Another thanks must go out to the SSH Accreditation Council (Tom LeMaster, Jack Jaeger, Keith Beaulieu, Cathy Deckers, Michele Kuszajewski, Pooja Nawathe, Jennifer Noble, Heather Noland, Dawn Swiderski, Debra Tauber, Jarrod Young, and our SSH Board Liaison, Dawn Schocken) for continuing to invest your time and expertise into growing and improving SSH Accreditation.
I’m beyond grateful to be able to work with you all and look forward to the continued accomplishments we will achieve together in 2023.
SSH Accreditation is a rigorous peer reviewed process that examines simulation programs’ process and outcomes in assessment, research, teaching/education, and/or systems integration and fellowship program. Final Accreditation decisions are made by the SSH Accreditation Board of Review based on evidence of compliance with established accreditation standards and criteria.
I would be remiss if didn’t include an expression of gratitude to the members that volunteer for the SSH Accreditation Full Board of Review and SSH Accreditation Provisional Board of Review. These folks uphold our unmatched, world-renowned accreditation standard.
And finally, thank you to our SSH Accredited Programs that have pursued and accomplished this endeavor! Achievement of SSH Accreditation is one that requires tremendous dedication and showcases a program’s commitment to quality healthcare simulation and improved patient safety.
We appreciate your commitment to SSH Accreditation, remain proud of your accomplishments, and look forward to seeing you at IMSH 2023.
Sincerely,
Kristyn Gadlage
SSH Director of Accreditation

Hands-on medical simulation, simplified
Penn Today
It’s late at night in the hospital, and you’ve just arrived for your emergency department shift. Monitor beeps punctuate the murmur of hushed voices and hurried footsteps. Suddenly, you hear the skid of gurney wheels down the hallway as EMTs rush an infant into the room. The child’s lips and fingertips are blue and cool to the touch, and the EMT tells you the capillary refill time is five seconds. All eyes are on you. What do you do?

New simulation lab provides engaging, experiential learning for caregivers
Winona Daily News
Think about someone who is outstanding at what they do — whether it’s their career or a hobby. Think about what it takes to be competent and confident, an expert, in what you do. Sometimes it takes great teachers, sometimes it takes extensive practice, and often, like when it comes to medical care, it takes both.

First-of-its-kind whole lung simulator helps predict new treatments and vaccines for tuberculosis
Michigan Health Lab
As the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19, tuberculosis is considered a major worldwide health threat — accounting for nearly two million deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. A team of University of Michigan researchers may have discovered the secret to advancing new treatments and vaccines for TB for the first time in a century: mathematics.

In a study of more than 2,000 students who completed Shadow Health's Health Assessment Digital Clinical Experiences™, we found that 74% of students significantly increased their clinical judgment skills. With our virtual preceptor and guidance provided along the way, these students asked deeper questions to uncover the patient’s clinical situation.

Health Sciences students join forces for interprofessional medical emergency training
ECU
The bleeding mannequins, the cries of ‘help me, help me,’ and the eyeball drooping from an actor’s face? Not real.
But the learning was.
On a beatific fall day, more than 30 students from across East Carolina University’s Health Sciences Campus — including students from the Brody School of Medicine, the College of Nursing and the College of Allied Health Sciences’ Department of Physician Assistant Studies — gathered to learn how emergency medicine works in practice, with a specific focus on integrating the unique skills of each medical specialty.

Lifelike mannequins that moan and groan help doctors learn life-saving emergency skills
ABC News
Mannequins with a heartbeat that blink, breathe and even scream in pain are helping teach young doctors critical emergency medicine at a regional hospital.
The training project at Mildura Hospital in Victoria's north-west uses Monash Rural Health's state-of-the-art medical simulation facility and gives young doctors realistic experience in life-threatening scenarios that would otherwise be impossible to simulate.

A report
in “The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing” revealed that new nurses scoring within the “acceptable” range on the Performance-Based Development System (PBDS) test — which evaluates a nurse’s ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and respond safely when providing patient care — fell from 23% in 2015 to 9% in 2020. The issues arising from unprepared nursing graduates is being exacerbated by the nursing shortage, as hospitals hire LPNs or ADNs for jobs that higher-level nurses typically take on. Virtual clinical simulations can provide hospitals a pathway to remedy the skills gap while filling short-term labor demands.

The application of a design-based research framework for simulation-based education
Cureus
In research, the adoption of a framework is essential. It enables researchers to operate with specified parameters and provides structure and assistance with research projects, programs, and technologies. The incorporation of a framework also facilitates the organizing and planning of our research efforts with respect to the breadth and depth of what we want to discover. Frameworks are equally important in research focused on simulation-based education. Simulation-based education is a form of experiential learning that provides participants with the opportunity to acquire or improve real-world-like knowledge and skills in a simulated environment.
