CDC outlines plan for cruise simulations to test COVID safety
Bloomberg
From May 12: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its guidelines for simulated cruises, a key step through which vessel owners can prove their safety to the government and get approval to resume profitable voyages in U.S. waters.
According to the CDC’s new instructions issued May 5, cruise companies should recruit “volunteers simulating the role of passengers” on trial sailings. Participants, who must be at least 18, have to either be fully vaccinated or provide a doctor’s note or self-certified statement that they have no high-risk conditions.

Clinic mandates surgical simulation training after research indicates improved performance
VirtaMed via EurekAlert
From July 7: Surgical resident training has traditionally occurred in a master-apprentice-type relationship, with graduated responsibilities until trainees are expected to perform procedures on their own. Given recent changes in the health care system, including reduced operating room time, increased difficulty of procedures and working hour restrictions, there is less time for residents to learn using traditional methods.
Researchers from the University of Manitoba and the Pan Am Clinic recently published a paper in the journal Arthroscopy, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation that looked at the effectiveness of a mixed reality simulator for the training of arthroscopy novices.

Why we need to simulate the entire US health system
STAT
From June 30: Facebook unveiled a remarkable piece of internal infrastructure in the spring of 2020. Called Web-Enabled Simulation (WES), the platform is a detailed replica of Facebook, with artificial user accounts ranging from simple bots that browse the site to machine-learning-based agents that mimic social interactions. The sophistication of the platform is astonishing.
Going far beyond traditional realms of software testing, which is typically directed at system behavior rather than user behavior, WES is like Facebook’s personal copy of itself.
