Medical simulation handiwork just might have you in stitches
Gonzaga University
From May 25: Cara Smith might be the most ingenious member of the nursing department. Thinking there had to be a better way to teach suturing to graduate nurse practitioner students and suture removal to undergrad BSNs, she went to Hollywood for the answer. Knowing that practicing suturing on chicken legs wasn’t the most sanitary, economical, ecologically sound or realistic method to teach stiches, Smith, Gonzaga’s simulations operation specialist, found a company that crafts things for the movie industry. She found a section on its website for medical simulation.

Clinical simulation and its integral role in healthcare training
HIT Consultant
From January 26: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a major shift in medical education. Since students were not classified as critical employees of hospitals, it became difficult for them to gain clinical hours with patients. With soaring demand for medical professionals to address the pandemic and students without access to hands-on training in hospitals, a new technique rose to prominence: remote learning with patient simulators.

Simulation study predicts COVID-19 deaths will rebound sooner or later when all restrictions are lifted
MAssachusetts General Hospital
From April 6: With COVID-19 cases going down rapidly in the United States, is it possible to avoid trade-offs between returning to pre-pandemic lifestyles — with no mask mandates or restrictions on social gatherings — and increasing COVID-19-related deaths? Investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston Medical Center, and Georgia Tech conducted a simulation study to answer this question by projecting the future of the COVID-19 pandemic in every state.

Simulations being used as very real way to eliminate Indiana's nursing shortage
WTHR-TV
From March 30: A new law just signed by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb aims to ease the state's critical nursing shortage.
It's estimated we're thousands of nurses short of our health care needs and yet some schools, especially during the pandemic, have had to turn students away because they didn't have clinical placements available.
