EPA publishes 2009 data on industrial/toxics releases in US

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published the latest data on industrial releases and transfers of toxic chemicals in the U.S. between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009. EPA is making the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) data available within weeks of the reporting deadline through its website and in the tools TRI Explorer and Envirofacts. The database contains environmental release and transfer data on nearly 650 chemicals and chemical categories reported to EPA by more than 21,000 industrial and other facilities. More

There are still considerable opportunities for plastic bottles to penetrate packaging markets, says UK research firm AMI. In its report on "Growth opportunities for blow moulded bottles in Europe", AMI says the latent potential for PET barrier bottles in beer, wine and milk is estimated to be a similar size to the carbonated soft drinks market for PET bottles, which was just under 1 million tons in 2009. Novomer gets funding to commercialize carbon-dioxide feedstocks

An $18.4 million federal stimulus award will help technology firm Novomer Inc. to commercialize its line of plastic materials based on renewable carbon-dioxide feedstocks. "This is the culmination of a lot of hard work," Novomer's Peter Shepard said by phone July 26. "Our goal is to take and scale up our polyol and polymer products." More

Production of aluminum foil in Europe climbed by more than 16 percent during the first half of 2010 as confidence continued to return to the market, said a leading trade association. The European Aluminum Foil Association (EAFA) announced an alufoil output of 432 Kt for the year to the end of June, which represents a year-on-year jump of 16.4 percent. The production figure is also slightly higher than pre-recession levels in the same period in 2008. More
