New method increases preventive health screenings for older patients

A UC Davis Health study found that an electronic population tool helped ensure patients over 50 got more of the preventive health screenings they needed. The study was published in the American Journal of Medicine. Using the new tool, the research team expanded uptake of preventive health services, especially cancer screenings and vaccinations.

Dallas, Fort Worth making changes in fight against COVID-19

Both Dallas and Fort Worth are making some major changes in the fight against COVID-19.
Fort Worth is closing testing and vaccination sites, citing increasingly low demand. However, the city says they can offer tests and shots as special requests, and even pop-up events as needed.

Report: Plano is the healthiest city in North Texas

Plano is the 33rd healthiest city in America and the healthiest city in North Texas, according to a new report by the finance website WalletHub.
Why it matters: North Texas — and Dallas in particular — has long struggled to promote traditional routes to wellness, including walkable streets, access to healthy food and recreational areas.

Tarrant County Health drops COVID-19 spread to 'low'

The Tarrant County Public Health Department recently lowered the community spread level from moderate to low.
The threshold for determining a low spread level indicates new cases are below 200 (per 100,000 population in the last 7 days) and that the number of admissions per 100,000 people is below 10 and the percent of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is below 10%.

Analysis: A health care problem too big for the Texas Legislature

Texas has more uninsured people than any other state, whether you count in raw numbers (about 5.4 million) or in the uninsured percentage of the total population (18.4%). But it’s one of only a dozen states that hasn’t expanded its Medicaid program.
Whether lawmakers suddenly change their mind about that program or not, they still have a problem to solve: How do they get health insurance, or cheaper health care, for all of those people?

When will Texas physicians be able to dispense medication?

If you have never been to a doctor outside of Texas, you may not know Texas is one of only a few states that restrict physicians from dispensing medicine directly from their clinic. Physician advocates hope that Texas joins the 45 states that allow some medicine distribution in physician offices.
