The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is extending the compliance date for menu labeling requirements from May 5, 2017 to May 7, 2018. This extension allows for further consideration of what opportunities there may be to reduce costs and enhance the flexibility of these requirements beyond those reflected in the interim final rule.

The National Labor Relations Board recently ruled that In-N-Out Burger's uniform policy, which forbids employees from wearing buttons, pins, or stickers on their uniforms, violated Section 8(a)(1) of the National Labor Relations Act. Although the popular burger chain argued "special circumstances" justified the policy – namely that it wanted to create the public image of a "sparkling clean" restaurant – the Board rejected that line of reasoning in its March 21, 2017 ruling.

A federal rule that would mandate all chain restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores and other food sellers to post calorie counts on their menus has been delayed until 2018 after a last-minute reprieve from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The rule, which originally was proposed as part of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, was set to go into effect Friday. The FDA said Monday that the new deadline for all businesses that sell food and have 20 or more locations to post calories is May 7, 2018.

You can kiss Hershey's high calorie counts goodbye.
The chocolate company recently announced that by 2022, half of its individually wrapped standard- and king-size sweets will be 200 calories or fewer. To lower that count, Hershey's will reformulate treats, introduce new ones and adjust the sizes of certain products. Also, by 2020, king-size bars will be designed to be more easily shared or split and saved for later; for example, instead of coming in one large piece, candy might be broken into two or three pieces in the package.

Years ago, when I first started covering Angel Stadium eats, the ballpark was littered with chains. Carl's Jr. Ruby's Diner. Panda Express. Jack in the Box. Beach Pit BBQ.
Thankfully over the last few years, the stadium's in-house culinary teams have made a noble effort to enhance the experience beyond frozen burgers, stale nachos and plain-Jane hot dogs. The culinary team doesn't always hit a home run, but its batting average continues to climb every season as the offerings have gradually moved away from national chains.

Marketers tend to pay a lot of attention to millennials, and with good reason. The demographic includes consumers aged about 18-34, a group that represents about 23.4 percent of the U.S. population. It's the biggest demographic in U.S. history — even bigger than the baby boomer generation. With millennials on the cusp of their prime spending years, they are set to transform the economy for decades, according to Goldman Sachs.
Snacking is no exception. Food manufacturers are getting on board, creating more options that cater to millennials' preference for tasty, convenient, nutritious snacks. Taste is still the most important factor for younger consumers when choosing a snack, but this demographic isn't willing to sacrifice health for flavor.

Why get lumbered with a non-recyclable cup when you could sip your latte from a waffle cone? Because it would leak through and scald your hands, of course. But what if it didn't?

With the acceleration of retail closures in recent years, shopping malls and commercial landlords are finding themselves pressed to find new, profitable tenants. Property management teams have begun looking for other ways to fill the void left by shuttered retailers. While some shopping malls are using restaurants and movie theatres to rejuvenate their offerings, recent headlines show that food markets may be the latest way for a retail site to attract shoppers.
