Firearm sales are likely to set a record in 2015. The gun ban lobby would have us believe that a smaller percentage of Americans are responsible for this sales increase, basically adding to their arsenals rather than a growing number of Americans becoming gun owners. They cite various polls to back up this assertion, including the General Social Survey, which claims that gun ownership is declining and pins the percentage of Americans who say they own at least one gun is about 32 percent. Other polls put the number upwards of around 40-45 percent.

A Wisconsin gun shop, Badger Guns, has been held liable for almost $6 million for injuries to two police officers who were shot with a gun purchased at the shop. The jury's verdict in the case, handed down on Oct. 13, found that a gun shop employee acted negligently — and, consequently, his employer was responsible for the employee's actions — when he sold a handgun to a person who was actually a straw purchaser for Julius Burton, who was too young to purchase the handgun. Burton used the same handgun a month after the purchase to shoot the officers.

Long range shooting is all the rage these days, whether it is target/gong shooting, varmint or big game hunting. Thirty years ago the list of cartridges suitable for this kind of shooting looked a lot different than today, especially for big game hunting — and that's largely been due to the advent of sophisticated rangefinders, which transformed the art of range estimation into a science that can be bought over the counter. Here are the best long range cartridges today for our favorite shooting disciplines.

A recent count of U.S. companies offering AR-15 type rifles was 430. Because the AR train has long left the station, I suspect that many of these "makers" have closed their doors, and that more are trying to sell their rifles at near cost prices. Still, there are many such companies that remain in business leaving lots of American firearms enthusiasts at a loss when it comes to choosing one maker over another.

The right to keep and bear arms is protected by the U.S. Constitution and cannot be restricted without serious cause. Of course Second Amendment advocates are opposed to the importation of the "terrorism watch" list into the firearms background check system. They understand well that it cannot be relied upon as a justification for denial.
