Statement on AIA's advocacy agenda development process to ensure AIA's long-term public leadership
AIANJ
AIA believes clarity and transparency are essential tools for the long-term success of AIA in Public Leadership. Very importantly, we want you to know how and why we engage on certain policy issues and decline to formally engage on others. Regardless of the issue, the AIA encourages its members to become individual activists on issues of critical import to members or the profession that fall outside of AIA’s organizational scope.

Risk Strategies
Together with growing pressure to shorten project schedules and decrease costs, there is a general acknowledgment that specialty subcontractors often have their own approach to fabrication and installation of project components. It is therefore increasingly common for architects and engineers to delegate aspects of the project’s design to the general contractor and its subs. But if the contract and/or project documentation is ambiguous, the design professional may look back and wish that it had provided detailed design of every connection, nut and bolt itself. Read the full article to find out why.

3 technologies are changing how we design for climate
Metropolis
Since the United Nations reported that buildings’ construction and operations account for 36 percent of global final energy use and nearly 40% of energy‐related carbon dioxide emissions, many governments, professional institutions, and private businesses have accelerated their efforts to reduce the climate impact of their work and their buildings. Worldwide, they’ve signed on to programs like the AIA 2030, the UN’s Paris Agreement, and the EU’s commitment to carbon-neutrality by 2050.

These 8 real structures inspired the castles in Disney films
Architectural Digest
You might know that many Disney films are based on fairytales. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs comes from the Brothers Grimm classic and Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault was the basis for the film of the same name. But a princess is nothing without her castle, so have you ever wondered what the architecture in Disney films is based on?

The 13 most controversial buildings in history
Architectural Digest
New buildings are constructed every day. Some to overwhelming fanfare, others to disdain, and most to little more acknowledgment than a passing glance on the street. Of course, there’s also another option: controversy. It doesn’t come around often, but when it does, it’s hard to forget.

Better design with a 'brain break'
Building Design + Construction
During the design process, there aren’t necessarily opportunities to implement “brain breaks,” brief moments to take a purposeful pause from the task at hand and refocus before returning to work. We are typically required to swiftly understand our clients’ goals and bring design to life on a timely schedule.
