  CDC Releases Interim Reopening Guidance for Dental Settings (Updated June 17, 2020)
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its Interim Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for Dental Settings During the COVID-19 Response. The key points of this guidance include: dental settings having unique characteristics that warrant specific infection control considerations, prioritizing critical dental services to minimize harm to patients from potential exposure to COVID-19, proactively communicating to both personnel and patients if sick, and knowing the steps to take if a patient with COVID-19 symptoms enters your facility.

  NIH Researchers Identify Features That Could Differentiate SARS-CoV-2 from Other Coronaviruses
A team of researchers from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health, identified genomic features of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and other high-fatality coronaviruses that distinguish them from other members of the coronavirus family. This research could be a crucial step in helping scientists develop approaches to predict, by genome analysis alone, the severity of future coronavirus disease outbreaks and detect animal coronaviruses that have the potential to infect humans.

In late May, President Trump announced that the United States will terminate its relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations' health agency, and will redirect funds to other bodies. The president said that the WHO "failed in its basic duty" in its response to the coronavirus outbreak.

  Dental Facilities Must Install Amalgam Separator by July 14 Deadline
Most dental facilities that have not already installed an amalgam separator to comply with an Environmental Protection Agency rule must do so by July 14. The rule is intended to reduce the discharge of mercury from dental offices into publicly owned treatment works, which discharge treated wastewater to rivers, lakes, bays and the ocean. Amalgam separators capture the mercury prior to discharge and allow it to be recycled or properly disposed.

  Researchers Map How Coronavirus Infection Travels Through Cells of Nasal Cavity and Respiratory Tract
A major study of novel coronavirus infection in human airways adds to evidence that wearing a mask is an important step toward limiting transmission of COVID-19. The findings suggest the virus tends to become firmly established first in the nasal cavity. Then, in some cases, the virus is aspirated into the lungs where it may cause more serious disease, including potentially fatal pneumonia.
