Music festivals are ripe for hacking
Hypebot    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Have you been to a music festival in the past 10 years? If you have, I'm sure that even while you were having a great time with your friends, at some point you likely suffered one of the many pains of the experience. Whether it was shoddy cell signal, the inability to find your friends, long lines or scheduling mishaps, one of your days at the festival (usually the first), was open for betterment. That is, of course, if you were even sober enough to notice. More

Helium balloons could cause world shortage, claims British chemist
Global Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Helium balloons may add a certain festive touch to parties — but a British scientist claims that the decorations could potentially set off a world helium shortage. That's considerably less fun. Helium has a wide range of scientific applications, including slowing down atoms, running super-cool refrigerators and conducting MRI scans. It's often mixed with oxygen in hospitals to make it easier for extremely sick patients and newborns to breathe, says the Telegraph — among many other crucial applications. More

Increasingly affected by adverse weather, Julie's Bicycle survey finds UK festivals consider weather now an essential part of planning process
Event Industry News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With 57 percent of festivals claiming weather worse than last year, 77 percent list extreme conditions as essential part of contingency planning to prevent the loss in ticket and bar sales and poor audience experience seen this summer. After starting the year facing a severe drought, the U.K.'s summer 2012 turned out to be the wettest on record in a century. This summer rainfall was 370.7 mm compared to a typical summer rainfall of 226.9mm — 60 percent higher than average. With this in mind, Julie's Bicycle, a not for profit working on sustainability within the creative industries, surveyed thirty seven festivals and outdoor events taking place across the U.K. in the summer of 2012. Despite closing, Ichthus Festival legacy lives on with those who attended
Lexington Herald-Leader    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There really wasn't supposed to be a second Ichthus Festival. As Judy Lyon, widow of festival founder Bob Lyon, and her sons remember it, the only reason there was a second festival was that they made some money on the first one in 1970 and didn't know what to do with it. So they had another one. More

BBC News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
